Dodola's stories create wonder in a landscape that's violated and dying. Dodola sells herself to passing caravans for food and tells Zam holy stories of love and magic, which she illustrates with Islamic calligraphy. The two escape and live in a boat abandoned in the desert. Set in a futuristic Islamic world of environmental collapse, the story loosely follows 'One Thousand and One Nights.' Dodola, a beautiful child in a poor village, is married off at age 9, then sold into slavery, where she becomes the favorite concubine of the sultan. Now, Craig Thompson's new graphic novel, 'Habibi,' finds this mystery in humanity, possibly the most wondrous place of all. It's what you feel in a cathedral, and with that final, dissonant chord of Mozart's Requiem. Whether you believe in God or not, this mystery is real.
